Practices for Spiritual Formation

Growing in your faith is a journey, but it's not one that you need to do alone. As you practice your faith with a community you become more and more like Jesus! We're so excited that you've chosen to go on the journey with us!

Below you'll find a list of practices, tools, and content that we believe can help you grow in your faith. This list isn't exhaustive so we'll keep adding to it over time.

Prayer

E.M. Bounds said that "the most important lesson we can learn is how to pray."

We believe that prayer is one of the primary tools that God gives us to be transformed! As we spend time with Jesus, we become like Jesus!

Below you'll find some tools to help you as you start your prayer journey!

Praying the Lord's Prayer

One of the most important places we can learn to pray is by looking at the way Jesus taught his disciples to pray.

Luke 11 starts off by saying:

Once Jesus was in a certain place praying. As he finished, one of his disciples came to him and said, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” Jesus said, “This is how you should pray…”

Listening Prayer

Listening Prayer is just what it sounds like. It’s a prayer based not on talking to God, but rather listening to Him.

John 10:27 says this about hearing what God has to say to us:

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”

Praying the Names and Attributes of God

We’ve all sung songs like, “Jesus what a powerful name!” and read these directly from scripture when Paul wrote:

“Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

Throughout the Bible many names are used to describe God and even more attributes are used to describe his character.

Have you ever thought of using those names and attributes as a prayer?

Breath Prayer

Breath prayer is a method of prayer that helps us to be aware of God’s presence and to draw near to Him.

Breath prayers originated from the contemplative (prolonged thought or prayer) way of life led by the Desert Fathers and Mothers (leaders and pastors that lived at the time of Jesus or the first generation following Jesus).

Start a Prayer Practice

Practicing the Way is a great tool for a variety of practices for spiritual formation (being with Jesus and becoming like Jesus).

Practicing the Way is meant to be used in community – the place where deeply ingrained ways of living are repatterned in the Way of Jesus, as we collectively adopt His practices.

There are 9 spiritual formation rhythms (Sabbath, Prayer, Fasting, Solitude, Generosity, Scripture, Community, Service, and Witness) and Practicing the Way is currently in the process of creating a course for each of them.

Reading the Bible

One of the most important ways of growing in our faith is by reading the words of Scripture!

2 Timothy 3 says this:

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

New Testament Reading Plan

This year our church is going through the New Testament in 365 days by using a plan from BibleProject!

If you want to join in or start the plan it’s available to you in the Bible app! If you don’t have the app, it’s available in your App Store (We’re using the one made by YouVersion)

You can find the New Testament Reading Plan by clicking here.

We hope reading the Bible regularly with BibleProject will be a blessing to you.

The Bible in a Year

One of the best ways to get the overall story of the Bible is to read it straight through!

That can be daunting so if you’re afraid to do the whole thing, start with the New Testament Plan above!

If you’re ready to dive into the deep end, one of our favorite reading plans is the Bible Recap by Tara Leigh Cobble.

Every day she provides a short podcast where she helps break down the days reading. She shares a “God Shot” which is her way of sharing the moment that God used to speak to her that day!

Small Groups

Like we said at the top of the page, the spiritual journey is not one that we need to do alone! At Faith we believe that "God does big things in small groups!"

One of the most important parts of our faith walk is the community that walks with us.

I'm Interested in Small Groups

One of the best ways to grow is by doing life with a small group of people who are in similar stages that you are in.

Whether you’re single or married, young or old, with kids or without kids, we want to get you connected to other believers so that you can have a community to grow with!

Recommended Small Group Resources

One of the first conversations a small group has is about what resources they should use to help grow in their faith and facilitate conversations with one another.

We have a great small group resource library.
